VIA: Western Approaches HQ - The Battle of the Atlantic ExperienceON THIS DAY in 1944, Captain F J “Johnnie” Walker passed away at the Naval Hospital in Seaforth, after suffering a stroke two days earlier. Captain Walker was the most successful anti-submarine warfare captain during the Battle of the Atlantic, taking command of the 36th Escort Group and later the 2nd Support Group. His funeral service took place at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral with full naval honours, his body being escorted to the docks by a naval procession and onto the destroyer Hesperus, for a burial at sea..
