The French warship Somme passed Penarth seafront this morning headed down channel to join other naval vessels. With escalating international tension, the war in Ukraine and nuclear threats being made by Russia, the ships of the European and UK Navies are on alert to monitor potential maritime threats. At the end of last month, a Russian submarine was located in the Bay of Biscay- accompanied by a Russian tug and was kept under surveillance by a British frigate and a French warship. There are fears of possible retribution by Russia for what is alleged to have been American/Polish sabotage of the Nord 2 pipeline (which fed Russian gas to Germany) The Somme (A631) is a "Durance" class command and replenishment ship which refuels NATO warships at sea and can also direct operations as a fleet flagship. She has a complement of about 170 officers and ratings. It's understood a pleasure yacht had to be towed out of the Wrach Channel off Penarth Head by a South Wales Police rigid inflatable - so as to leave the fairway clear for the departure of the big French ship.
