VIA: Ireland and Peg's Cottage.HELLO, SAILOR! High above the River Foyle, near the Peace Bridge in Derry, stands the International Sailor. The 8 ft high statue was erected in 2013, the twin of one which overlooks the harbour in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They are in tribute to the thousands of sailors from all the nations who helped protect vital shipping convoys during the Battle of the Atlantic in WWII. Derry was home to many of the destroyers and frigates involved in the bloody Atlantic battle. Its westerly position made it the most strategic and important of four UK ports for the Allied forces battling the U-boat threat to the Atlantic convoy lifeline. The statue doesn't portray the sailor firing torpedoes or peering through binoculars but, with his hammock on his right shoulder and his kit bag in his left hand, he's just an average sailor off to do his job.
