UK in Malta - British High Commission Valletta UK in Malta Deputy High Commissioner Tristan Gilchrist and the Malta Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets were honoured to be invited by Commander Claire Thompson on board the Royal Navy’s HMS Montrose, as she docked in Malta earlier today. The British frigate spent the past three and a half years in the Gulf, Indian Ocean and Red Sea, where she has been supporting UK and international security priorities, safeguarding merchant shipping, tackling criminal and terrorist activity including smuggling of arms and drugs, and working with allies across the region. HMS Montrose is the third British ship to visit Malta, following the arrival of HMS Albion and RFA Argus in November. Did you know❓ - HMS Montrose left the UK in October 2018 and immediately accompanied 132 merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, supporting the safe passage of hundreds of thousands of tonnes of shipping carrying oil, gas, cars, electronics and other goods. - Recently, HMS Montrose’s sailors and Royal Marines seized around 870kg of crystal methamphetamine worth around £15.5m from a dhow in the Arabian Sea. This was her fifth interdiction of drugs this year, preventing nearly £47m illegal narcotics reaching the streets in 2022. - On two occasions earlier this year, HMS Montrose also seized weapons from speedboats being operated by smugglers in international waters south of Iran.
