Sadly, the CWGC have only listed men of the Royal Navy, so no Sigvard Gronhaug, his Captain James Williams, or their crew mates, and all the other Merchant Seamen who lost their lives in the Halifax explosion. The blast was the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons, releasing the equivalent energy of roughly 2.9 kilotons of TNT. It is unlikely that we will ever know the true cost, how many Merchant Seaman died, succumbed to injures perhaps many months or years later. The 27 men of the S.S. Remember, Reflect, Respect and Retell to the next generation.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.”
“Let us always be inspired and may the flame of remembrance within us never be extinguished.”
