National Memorial Arboretum In 1941, HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales were sunk by Japanese aircraft off Kuantan on the Malayan Coast. Over 840 sailors were lost, representing one of the largest and most tragic losses suffered by the Royal Navy in a single action. Most of those rescued were returned to Singapore, which fell to Japanese forces two days later and tragically many who survived the sea battle died in Prisoner of War camps over the next four years. The HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse Memorial at the Arboretum is dedicated to the memory of all those who served on those ships.
