National Memorial Arboretum.Yesterday: On This Day: in 1939 the Battle of the River Plate became the first major naval battle of the Second World War, and the only episode of the War to take place in South America. The German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee had been terrorising Allied shipping in the South Atlantic. It was eventually tracked down and engaged by three ships from the Royal Navy’s South American division and all four ships sustained considerable damage. Given just 72 hours to repair by neutral Uruguay, the Germans knew escape was impossible and scuttled (sank) the ship in the River Plate. The Battle brought the first victory of the Second World War which lifted the Country's morale. The impressive black granite Battle of the River Plate Memorial at the Arboretum was unveiled on 12 April 2014 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate, becoming the 300th memorial to be dedicated at the Arboretum.
