The Mystery Behind the battleship HMS Audacious in WW1.. a major cover up.. are there many more we don't know about? (Story from Valiant Annual 1980... HMS Audacious was the fourth and last King George V-class dreadnought battleship built for the Royal Navy in the early 1910s. After completion in 1913, she spent her brief career assigned to the Home and Grand Fleets. The ship was sunk by a German naval mine off the northern coast of County Donegal, Ireland, early during the First World War... the sinking was subject to a D notice issued under Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill's instructions preventing the newspapers reporting the loss... a merchant vessel was fitted out to sail under her identity. She is the largest warship ever sunk by naval mines.
