THE BARRY PILOT BOAT RETURNS TO SERVICE AFTER A CHECK-OVER IN PENARTHThe rugged all-weather vessel that takes channel pilots out to sea to board incoming merchant ships and guide them safely into port, has been undergoing a stem-to-stern checkover at Penarth Marina. The pilot boat leads such a hard life, the regulations require her to undergo regular safety inspections. The storm-proof fully enclosed control station of today’s pilot vessel is a far cry from the famous Barry pilot vessels of yesteryear which were helmed from an open cockpit and often just crewed by a skipper and a boy An unusual feature of today’s Barry Pilot boat is the inboard handrails on the deck of the vessel – which provide something to hold onto in rough weather but don’t hamper the pilot when he’s making the split-second decision to step transfer o the merchant ships and make the hazardous vertical ascent up the side of large ship. Today – with her Penarth Marina check-over complete – the Barry Pilot boat headed back to her home port, ready for the next large cargo carrier to arrive in Welsh waters. LINK
