To be follwed up; Prep for local press release;
Much of anything could stem from history, whether we listened, learned or acted? From a “Once and future King” to a “Once and future Merchant Navy”. Arthur may have used the sea to move troops quickly. It is often said if blood was the price, our near forgotten Merchant Navy paid in full. From far of Latins, cross channel threats, mighty armadas, undersea pests, from our fishermen to civilian crews, they do what they do, supporting our forces and helping feed our Nation, loss of seamens’ lives was heavy.
On Saturday past, May 25 the Merchant Navy Association (Wales) held an Annual Remembrance Service, this to pay respect, tribute, commemorate and remember those that have “Crossed the Bar” (lost/passed on) So many now in Fiddlers Green; (Fiddler’s Green is a metaphor for an afterlife or a place of eternal peace. The term “Fiddler’s Green” has nautical origins and refers to a mythical paradise for sailors, where there is everlasting music, merriment, and tranquility.
We commemorate Merchant Navy Day each year on 3 September. This is the anniversary of the first attack on an Allied merchant ship in World War II, only hours after Britain declared war on Germany in 1939. Most services are on the nearest Sunday and are multi faith as were many crewmen. From the National Merchant Navy Monument (Tower hill, London) “We Will Remember Them”. For South Wales from Newport to Swansea many events will take place and Barry representing the Vale of Glamorgan and the many lost. The local Merchant Navy Association (Wales) Barry branch continue to support and assist other bodies and thank the same for all they do. From RNLI 200 to Sea Sunday, There is a lot going again this year.
