Good Morning,
This summer, Newport will join the rest of the UK and Europe in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, codenamed Operation Overlord, which took place on 6 June 1944.
On Thursday 6 June 2024, the bravery and sacrifice of those people in securing the peace and freedom we enjoy today will be observed by the lighting of beacons around the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories.
The Queen Elizabeth II playing fields in Ringland will be hosting Newport’s beacon lighting ceremony to remember the 210,000 Allied casualties of the landings.
The event will start at 7:30pm with the beacon lit at 21.15 followed by the reading of a National Tribute.
Prior to the lighting of the Beacon, musical performances will be undertaken by: Gwent Music Brass Ensemble, Gwent Music Celtic Group, City of Newport Male Choir and Newport Cathedral Choir.
Please come along, bring a picnic, a chair and join in the evening remembering those who made sacrifices for us.
For info, a road closure will be in place on Edward German Crescent and Butterworth Close from 17.30 to 22.00. However, access will be available on Edward German Crescent from its access off Sterndale Bennett Close to Newman Close, Warlock Close and Tippett Close.
Please feel free to share the attached flyer to other members who may like to join.
