The South Wales town of Barry and the surrounding area has a rich and varied heritage that stems back to Roman times and beyond; certainly, the first evidence of Barry`s wartime history is the Roman ’mansio’, a sort of latter day inn or hotel for Roman officials at the Knapp. Barry`s war heritage spans to modern times, with the docks being used during the Middle East conflicts of the late 50s and early 60s. It is believed that during WW1 the first American troops to land in Britain, embarked at Barry, and during WW2 the port became an important staging post for US Forces in preparation for the D-Day landings in Normandy………….such is the history of Barry at War. Barry at War Heritage Group:Following the successful partnership between the Barry Tourist Railway and the Barry at War Heritage Group, a small area has been set aside at Barry Island Railway Station to be used as a mini-museum. The museum will aim to highlight how the town of Barry on the surrounding area has been affected by conflicts. We’re aiming to open during the spring of 2013, and seek to hold fund raising events to raise the funds needed to establish the museum at the Barry Island Station during the winter. The timing of the opening is significant, as 2013 is the ‘Year of the Convoy’, which is especially poignant given Barry`s strong links to the Merchant Navy.barryatwar.info/barry-at-war-museum/K.
