Prince, Philip Duke of Edinburgh
Prince Philip has been discharged from hospital just in time to enjoy his 91st birthday.
The Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip has been given the all-clear from the King Edward VII Hospital in central London:
Prince Philip missed out on the final celebrations for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee last weekend - including the special royal concert at Buckingham Palace - after being admitted on bank holiday Monday.
Now, after five days under the care of medical staff at the hospital near Regents Park, he is returning to Windsor Castle where he is expected to mark his 91st birthday with an intimate and low-key celebration.
"His Royal Highness left hospital today. He continues to improve and he will now continue his convalescence at home," a palace spokesman said.
When asked if he was feeling better and looking forward to his birthday. He apparently nodded and quipped: “I wouldn’t be coming out otherwise.”
He will celebrate with his family on Sunday, the palace said.
Philip had been planning to celebrate his birthday privately and is not due to attend his next scheduled engagement until Tuesday, when the Queen hosts a garden party at the Sandringham Estate to mark her Diamond Jubilee.
