Falling this year during Seafarers Awareness Week, Armed Forces Day on 30 June raised public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, including the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, plus the Merchant Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
Many turned out around the country to pay tribute to servicemen and women for Armed Forces Day.
Special services were attended by members of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Merchant Navy whom stood shoulder to shoulder with civic dignitaries and members of the public.

The Merchant Navy had a high profile this year, as National Armed Forces Day commemorated the 30th Anniversary of the Falklands Conflict, when many ‘ships taken up from trade’ (STUFT) with British civilian crews served alongside members of the Armed Forces. Seafarers UK, the leading charity for seafarers in need, is to staged a Civic Reception in Plymouth’s Guildhall on the eve of the National Armed Forces Day Event. Guest of honour were Seafarers UK’s President, His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex. Jointly hosting the reception on Friday 29 June were Plymouth City Council. The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Michael Wright, and other Councillors, along with VIPs including Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, Eric Dancer CBE JP. 350 guests included representatives of all the Armed Forces and the Merchant Navy.
