I still have mine issued by Ministry of War Transport. At the start of the war scorn was heaped on men in civvies as all crew were except for officers. To stop the tirade of abuse the lapel badge was issued. I sailed out of Liverpool where the insults were the worst. Sad to say Lady Astor, an American married to an English Lord called us scum of the world, disgusting dirty men, ( she must have been knocked back by a seaman, she was not pretty) She undid the pride of the badge, girls would not date us because of her lies,
Best Wishes for Merchant Navy Day, we have a new War memorial in the Melbourne Maritime Precinct next to Polly Woodside were the Web Dock sheds used to be.
