I’m writing to ask if you would be able to help us to promote the 1915 crew list project that we are running with the National Archives. As you know, the project involves volunteers indexing information from digitized images of crew lists dating from 1915, that are held at the National Archives and the NMM. The work involves working at home online, and sending completed work to us electronically. The index information is then added to the TNA and NMM online catalogues. We aim to have all the information online by 2014, the anniversary of the First World War. Some of the index information from the NMM 1915 crew lists is already available on the TNA’s catalogue in a series called BT400, I was wondering if you or one of your colleagues could promote the project again as we need more volunteers to complete the project by 2014. I wondered if you could circulate information about the project to the Branches and members of the Merchant Navy Association who have email. I attach a flyer which you’re welcome to use for this purpose. For the first time ever, the crew lists of the British Merchant Navy from the year 1915 have been digitised and made available to search for free. Find relatives and loved ones via the National Maritime Museum database of over 39,000 crew lists, featuring more than 750,000 names.
