MERCHANT NAVY STAMP OF APPROVAL
Defeat was mighty close in the second greatest war, Five thousand ships with cargos sent to the ocean floor, Merchant men were slaughtered sustaining our lifeline, The Country issued ration books so desperate was the time.
A crisis at the Home Front, foodstuff very short, Rations and provisions scarcely making port, Convoys steaming steadfast under Red Ensigns, Faced demise from U-boats, the bombers and the mines.
There were many heroes on land and sea and air, And thirty thousand Seamen gave their lives out there, Transporting reinforcements, resources and supplies, And fuel to fly the spitfires fighting in the skies.
Perhaps we should commend them by illustrating stamps, With the freighters and the liners, the tankers and the tramps, It would be a special tribute, rather overdue, To mariners who manned them and a way to say thank you.

Royal Mail’s 2013 stamp programme comprises 12 main commemorative stamp issues, at least five of them marking significant anniversaries. These include sets celebrating the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, the 125th anniversary of the Football League and the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. A Classic TV issue is expected to feature Doctor Who, on its 50th anniversary, after plans were leaked on a fans’ website earlier this year. And a Royal Portraits issue, marking the 60th anniversary of the Coronation, is said to include a special portrait of the Queen commissioned by Royal Mail. We understand the Great Britons issue will honour Benjamin Britten, David Lloyd George, Vivien Leigh and Peter Cushing, amongst others, and sets will also be dedicated to the Merchant Navy and British Butterflies. 21 February:
Jane Austen (Stampex issue)
19 September:
Merchant Navy (Stampex issue)
Both of the above possible issues are marked (Stampex issue);
Although I am seeking further info and confirmation, it would seem that these are released at the time of the major stamp exhibitions and would hopefully be very much featured:
STAMPEX is a twice yearly British stamp show held at the Business Design Centre (BDC) at Islington, London, every Spring and Autumn. The show is organised by the Philatelic Traders Society (PTS) through Stampex Limited.
The STAMPEX Show is one of the most outstanding philatelic shows in Great Britain that celebrates philately in many ways, as well as presenting a wide range of collectables, including stamps, postcards and other items for the public to buy and collect. With many bargains to waiting to be discovered, unique opportunities may be presented for exploring stamp collections or individual items, and of course, interact with many leading local and international suppliers, dealers, wholesalers and resellers.
If this were to be the case not only would we achieve a stamp of approval for them, but hopefully much publicity for the MN and the year of the convoy.
It would be good if the Government would allow the sought after Arctic tributes in 2013 also.
Next is another big push for an MN coin/s of the Realm.
Fingers crossed still.
