Convoy veterans given first Arctic Star medals:Forty veterans of the World War II Arctic convoys have become the first recipients of a new medal. Prime Minister David Cameron hailed the men as a "group of heroes", as he presented them with the newly-created Arctic Star. The Arctic convoys, reportedly called the "worst journey in the world" by Winston Churchill, took supplies to the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1945. More than 3,000 men died while on the convoys. Press Release – Arctic Star Medal Award Ceremony, Loch Ewe, May 2013
PRESS RELEASE ARCTIC STAR MEDAL AWARD CEREMONY ANNOUNCED FOR LOCH EWE, SCOTLAND
21st March 2013 The Russian Arctic Convoy Museum Project has announced today that there will be an Arctic Star Medal Award Ceremony on 9th May at Loch Ewe, Wester Ross, Scotland for 40 Veterans attending a unique Reunion – on the shores of the remote North West Scottish loch where many of them started their journeys to Russia during WWII. The day will include a Memorial Service led by the Bishop of Moray, Ross and Caithness at the Arctic Convoy Memorial high above the mouth of Loch Ewe and will be attended by the Veterans from all across the UK and their families, VIPs and the local community. Museum Project Chairman Francis Russell is delighted with the decision to include a Medal Ceremony. ‘We are honouring all the Convoy Veterans during our WWII Event (May 6-11) and this will be a unique addition for us all – for the Veterans to receive their medals officially and for all of us to witness such a well deserved, long awaited and memorable occasion. It is of special significance that this is happening on the shores of Loch Ewe, where many of the Veterans began their journeys to Russia.
