2 hOUR PROGRAMME: Two hundred and fifty World War II veterans join HRH the Princess Royal at Liverpool Cathedral for the 70th commemoration of the Battle of the Atlantic - a battle that started on the first day of World War II, and didn't cease until its last. Home to Western Approaches HQ, Liverpool was the hub from where thousands of men set sail, risking their lives to bring crucial supplies to an otherwise starving Britain. Beneath the waves lurked a threat Churchill was to describe as the only thing that ever really frightened him - the U-Boat peril. Veterans from the Royal and Merchant Navy join together to commemorate the longest battle of the Second World War, and remember those that never came back.
