“The Barry Wartime Weekend event (Sat 31 August / Sun 1 Sept), which will be held on the next weekend after the this Bank Holiday, will show many other aspects of the Barry Home Front during the Second World War. The event will remember our Merchant Seamen in advance of Merchant Navy Day: September 3rd Every Year. “There will be air raids, escaped German Prisoners of War and an exhibition by the ‘Scallywags’ of the British Resistance who would have been Britain’s last line of defence should the Nazis have invaded. “Many local schools are studying this period of history from September so it is hoped that families will take the opportunity to bring their kids to this free educational family event. Along with the Home Front, Barry Island will bristle with military hardware. There will be weapons and military vehicles on display at the Barry Tourist Railway Station and a full-sized replica Spitfire, kindly sponsored by Barry Town Council will be located inside the Barry Island Pleasure Park. “Money raised at the event will go towards supporting the work of the Barry at War Group and to fund further improvements to the Glamorgan Wartime Heritage Centre. BIG BARRY AT WAR WEEKEND — our biggest event of the year featuring many historic military vehicles and a real Spitfire on the platform at Barry Island station! We are a paying our respects to the Merchant Navy for 2013 the year of the convoy. We also have a super steam train for this event in the shape of the Great Western Society's Steam Railmotor train making its first visit to South Wales. An event not to be missed! THE UNIQUE Edwardian Steam Railmotor will help to take the Barry Tourist Railway back to the glorious to the glorious days of steam at this year’s Barry days of steam for Wartime Weekend (August 31 to September 1). It had been hoped for a Merchant Navy Class Locomotive, but was to heavy for the bridge to Barry Island where the event takes place.
