WAR heroes were honoured on Today as part of the annual Merchant Navy Day.

Erewash Borough Council has organised for memorial events to be held at Ilkeston and Long Eaton town halls.

The council raised the Red Ensign – the flag, commonly known as 'The Red Duster', that flies proudly on British merchant ships , at both events.

In addition, the council will took part in wreath-laying at the war memorials in Ilkeston and Long Eaton at 11am on the day.

Sailor to pay tribute to fellow Merchant Navy comrades:

A FORMER sailor who survived German torpedoes in the Second World War said he expects to feel emotional today as remembers his Navy comrades at a ceremony in Derby.

Walter Randle, of Chaddesden Lane, Derby, will mark Merchant Navy Day in the Market Place alongside a host of other ex-servicemen
