Battle of Britain illustrated talk flies in to wartime museum:
Spitfires are once again to feature at the Barry Island based Glamorgan Wartime Heritage Centre, as local author Ron Powell brings the ‘Barry Spitfire month’ to an end with an illustrated talk on the ‘Battle of Britain’.
Retiring from the Royal Air Force as a Group Captain after 32 years service, former pilot, Ron Powell moved to Barry Island and has become a popular writer and public speaker, giving illustrated talks to many local organisations.
During his RAF career, Ron met several Battle of Britain veterans and served alongside Spitfire display pilots.
Ron`s debut novel, ‘Wings Over Summer’, tells the fictitious story of a Spitfire pilot from Barry during the Battle of Britain.
The book follows him into the savage air battles over southern England at the height of the Battle of Britain. Several times a day, he witnesses the death and disfigurement of friends, and wrestles with the knowledge that the same could happen to him at any moment.
Barry at War Spokesman Ade Pitman commented, ‘’September is an important month for both the Royal Air Force, and the Merchant Navy with both having commemorations.
In support of these, Barry at War have a Merchant Navy display at our Glamorgan Wartime Heritage Centre base and a display in Barry Library, in support of the RAF Association.
This display features both model RAF aircraft, and a list of all the sponsors of the ‘Barry Spitfire’, which was bought by the town for the RAF in 1943. This was the reason why we had a Spitfire at this year`s Barry Wartime Weekend.
Bringing our ‘Barry Spitfire Month’ to a fitting end, local author and former RAF pilot, Ron Powell will be giving an illustrated talk about the Battle of Britain’’.
This will take place at the Glamorgan Wartime Heritage Centre, Barry Island Station at 7.30pm on Wednesday 18th September 2013. Doors open at 7pm. As with all of our evening lectures, admission is free. For more information call Ade Pitman on 07930 874161.
