NEW DELHI: The 43rd National Maritime Day celebrations began here on Thursday with the inauguration of Merchant Navy Week by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu pinned the first flag on the Prime Minister's dress. On the occasion, Dr. Singh wished the shipping fraternity a bright and successful future.
Merchant Navy Week is celebrated throughout the country every year and it culminates in the National Maritime Day on April 5, in commemoration of the sailing of the first Indian vessel SS Loyalty in 1919 from Mumbai to London.
