The Russians show how to honour our boys:LAST year I mentioned a documentary about the horrors of the Arctic convoys of the Second World War and the Government’s disgraceful reluctance to give the last few veterans a distinctive medal for what they went through. LINK

19 SEPTEMBER 2013:
A group of British veterans of the Arctic Convoys, all members of the Russian Convoys Club, launched in 1985 in the Royal British Legion in Kennington, Southwark (London), have initiated an unprecedented gesture to present the Arctic Star medal to Russia’s Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow.
Every veteran in the Club offered his own medal, so the draw had to be made. It was James Pitts (89), who defended convoys JW66 and RA66 and is also due to carry the Olympic Torch in Arkhangelsk on 1st November, whose medal will be presented.

It appears that British Arctic convoys veterans of the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy wish to pay their respect to the Russian people for the heroism and the courage displayed during the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945.

Two British veterans from the World War II have arrived in Russia to join sport stars and other celebrities in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay.James Pitts and Charles Downs were invited to Arkhangelsk as a sign of the city’s ongoing gratitude for the role of the Arctic convoys. Between 1941 and 1945, over 1,400 merchant and naval ships made 78 trips to Russia as part of the convoys. They brought more than 4 million tonnes of supplies, mainly provisions and munitions. This represented a significant contribution to the Soviet war effort. LINK
